How I Got a Better Grip on My VR Controllers
Pro Grips Universal PreCut on my VR controllers
I love VR, but I used to hate how the controllers felt in sweaty hands. On my Meta Quest 3 especially, the smooth plastic would start sliding the second a horror game or FPS got intense — and I’d clamp down on the wrist straps like a safety net. Then I tried our PRO Grips Universal PreCut on those same controllers. Same pack we sell for mice. Suddenly the controllers felt planted in my hands, the pistol grip in shooters felt natural, and I stopped relying on the straps the same way.
Short answer: better VR controller grip without weird straps
- Problem: Quest 2 / Quest 3 / SteamVR / Index / Vive / PSVR-style controllers get slippery when your hands sweat.
- Fix I use: PRO Grips Universal PreCut — textured grip pieces you place on every finger contact point.
- Result: much better hold for VR FPS and scary games, less need to trust wrist straps alone, and a more natural “gun in hand” feel.
Works across Quest, SteamVR, Index, Vive and more
Universal PreCut isn’t cut for one mouse SKU — it’s a mix of shapes and sizes so you can cover whatever you’re holding. That makes it useful beyond gaming mice:
- Meta Quest 3 Touch Plus controllers (what I use) and Quest 2 Touch controllers
- SteamVR setups and Valve Index controllers
- HTC Vive / Vive-style wands
- PlayStation VR / PSVR2-style Sense controllers and similar plastic shells
If the controller has smooth plastic where your fingers rest, you can usually land a grip piece there. I’m not claiming every headset’s OEM accessory pack is identical — just that the same Universal PreCut sheet that works on a GPX2 also works surprisingly well on VR controllers.
How I applied PRO Grips on my VR controllers
Here’s how I applied them on my Quest 3 controllers (same method whether you’re on Quest 2, Quest 3 or a SteamVR stick):
- Wipe the controller shell so it’s clean and dry.
- Grab the controller the way you actually play (FPS grip, not a polite demo hold).
- Note every place your fingers and palm make contact with the plastic.
- Pick pieces from the Universal PreCut pack that match those contact patches — the pack includes a bunch of different shapes and sizes (see the product images below), so you’re not stuck with one rectangle.
- Stick a grip on each contact surface so your fingers land on texture instead of bare plastic.
- Press firmly for a few seconds. Other layouts work too — rings, face buttons, battery door — as long as you’re covering where you slip.
On mine, that meant wrapping the handle and covering the zones under my fingers and thumb so the controller “locks” into the hand when I raise a virtual pistol.

Why it matters in VR FPS and horror
In flat-screen games a mouse slip is annoying. In VR, a controller slip breaks immersion and can make you yank the wrist strap. When I play first-person shooters in VR — aiming pistols, tracking targets — the grips make the controllers feel like they belong in my hands. Same when a scary game spikes my heart rate and my palms get wet: the texture still bites. I still keep straps on as a backup (smart), but I’m not depending on them to save a bad grip anymore.
Same PRO Grips we use on gaming mice
If you already know us from mouse gear: this is the same PRO Grips Universal PreCut pack. We also make model-specific sheets for mice like the Logitech G Pro X Superlight / Superlight 2 and the Razer Viper V3 Pro — useful if you want a perfect cut for desk play after your VR session.
FAQ
Will PRO Grips Universal fit Quest 3 controllers?
Yes, that’s what I use them on. Place pieces on the contact surfaces where your fingers and palm rest. Quest 2 Touch controllers have a slightly different shape, so a Quest 2 layout won’t be a 1:1 copy of my Quest 3 photo, but the method is identical.
Do I still need wrist straps?
I keep them on. Better grip just means you’re not relying on the strap to compensate for slippery plastic.
Will this damage the controller?
PRO Grips use adhesive meant for gaming peripherals. Apply to clean plastic, and don’t force-peel with heat-gun aggression if you ever remove them — go slow.
